Diamond Drama

Baseball in Korea is like a sacred ritual wrapped in a ballpark blanket—an elaborate dance of hope and despair that unfolds over nine innings. With ten teams in the mix—LG Twins, Doosan Bears, Kiwoom Heroes, SSG Landers, KT Wiz, Samsung Lions, Kia Tigers, Lotte Giants, Hanwha Eagles, and NC Dinos (not in any particular order)—choosing a team is as crucial as picking the right kimchi for your meal.

Now, here’s where my baseball story takes a delightful detour. I’m a devoted fan of the SSG Landers. When people hear that, they often ask if I’m from Incheon, their home city. I have to admit that, no, I’m from Daegu, where cheering for the Samsung Lions is practically mandatory. But life, in all its twisted glory, had me rooting for the Landers after they won the Korean Series.

Every morning, around 6:30 AM, I dive into the chaos of baseball. Thanks to the time difference between Korea and New York City, my mornings start with the game’s fifth inning—perfectly timed for a pre-work adrenaline boost. It’s like an emotional workout where the only equipment you need is a strong cup of coffee and a willingness to question your life choices. Baseball’s charm lies in its ability to transform you from a peaceful morning person into a raving lunatic in the span of a few pitches.

And let’s be real—baseball can make even the most composed individual turn into a melodramatic wreck. One moment, you’re cheering like you’ve won the lottery, and the next, you’re mourning the loss of that crucial game as if the universe itself conspired against you. It’s a sport that teaches patience and humility—or, more accurately, how to scream at a TV screen while pretending your neighbors won’t judge you.

Despite the rollercoaster of emotions and the frequent moments that make you question your sanity, my devotion to the SSG Landers remains as steadfast as ever. Baseball, with its blend of beauty and frustration, has a unique way of drawing you in with its unpredictable nature. It’s a testament to the fact that even in our most cynical moments, we find solace in the shared madness of the game.

So here’s to baseball—the grand spectacle that makes our mornings a bit brighter and our temperaments a bit more... theatrical. Whether you’re cheering for the Landers, Lions, or any other team, we’re all part of this wonderfully absurd journey.

My secret wish for this season? To get all the Korean baseball fans here in NYC to gather around, stay up way too late, and yell at the screen together during the postseason. We’ll be half-asleep, highly caffeinated, and collectively questioning our life choices—but hey, at least we’ll be suffering together.
